| [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Nintendo next handheld console will be a Nintendo 2DS. The 2DS will launch in red and blue models to start and will be sold alongside the standard 3DS and 3DS XL. The 2DS is fully compatible with all 3DS and DS games. The Nintendo 2DS cannot display Nintendo 3DS games in 3D. It does includes two cameras on the reverse side, so augmented reality games still function and players can still take 3D photos. While the photos cannot be displayed on the 2DS, they can still be viewed in full 3D if transferred to a 3DS.The console uses a "slate" format, as contrasted with the clamshell design of recent Nintendo handhelds. Kotaku noted that it is "the first non-clamshell Nintendo handheld since the 2005 Game Boy Micro." They also said, "The almost square form factor for 2DS is unusual for any gaming or non-gaming hardware." The console weighs less than the 3DS XL. While Nintendo has not provided exact measurements, The Washington Post believes it is roughly the same size as a Nintendo DS or 3DS.The buttons on the console have been moved upward, and will be next to the upper screen. The console can be put to sleep using a "SLEEP" slider that replicates closing the clamshell on a standard 3DS. However, the console lacks the power-saving mode of the 3DS and 3DS XL.The stylus is the same size as that of the 3DS. It will include a 4GB Secure Digital card and will utilize the same power source as the 3DS and DSi. The console includes just one speaker, which plays mono sound. The headphone jack allows for full stereo sound output. The shoulder buttons are thicker than those on the 3DS, and are concave. The microphone has been moved to the lower left.It still features all the wireless functionality of 3DS WiFi can still be turned off, though it’s done via controls in the software rather than with a physical switch. It can be used for StreetPass as with the 3DS, although the user needs to toggle a switch to do so.The software of the console is essentially the same as that of the 3DS, and the Nintendo eShop will still be available. This Console will release October 12, 2013 (USA) | |
